My key observation from the recent indie games event was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these amphibious creatures. Considering a band of frogs is known as an army, it seems they are taking over the industry.
Amphibians have been not at all new to the world of games. Ever since the era of Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a niche presence. However, their visibility has markedly increased in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are serious Frog Games.
To grasp this rise, I performed a detailed review into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was admittedly subjective, focusing on games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The results paint a clear picture: a steady rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's growing prominence in the public consciousness is partially visible elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the wave in gaming appears uniquely powerful.
In my opinion, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs have natural creative potential for game developers.
Several the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even begun—and the chance for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year so far.
Should these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we might just be witnessing a full-blown frog gaming renaissance.
